Cruachan Hydro Power Station

Client

Following a Mott Macdonald survey and scheme design on behalf of Scottish Power, Nuvia were requested to tender for the detail design, installation and commissioning of a new chilled water and buffer storage system for the station. Nuvia approached JGC to partner with them on the project to provide MEC&I manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning services. Following the competitive tender exercise, Nuvia and JGC were awarded the contract on price and technical ability.

JGC Deliver

JGC ability to design and manufacture the 9500litre 10 bar buffer storage vessel in accordance PD 5500 2006 provided significant programme and cost assurance in respect to a relatively short lead time from contract award to the commencement on site date dictated by the station operations.

Cruachan Power Station is an underground power station and specific requirements for working within the facility are unique to Cruachan. The installation of the new chilled water package unit, buffer storage vessel, pipe work and electrical controls and instrumentation was executed smoothly and problem free within the confines of the underground cavern and tunnels. The project was completed on time enabling the system to be integrated into the existing infrastructure to meet the station shut down requirements.

JGC’s working relationship with Nuvia and Scottish Power was particularly pleasing and provided a stable and constructive communications and collaboration framework that ensured the completion of the project to time and cost.

Solution

This project was the first by JGC and Nuvia working in partnership and also the first for both organisations in respect to contracting with Scottish Power. The satisfactory completion of the project has established a good working relationship between all, and forms the basis of further tendering opportunities based on value for money and strong technical ability.

Nuvia “JGC’s commitment to safety combined with their MEC&I manufacturing and installation capabilities make them an ideal partner for this project.

JGC “As a principle contractor we deliver complex engineering projects for the utility industries. Our wide experience in extreme and remote locations has produced an understanding of energy and water provision and the ability to service their detailed demands”.
